How to Make Videos on the Go

Hello, it’s Dale Beaumont here and in this video, I’m going to share with you my new camera setup for making videos on the go.

If you’re a speaker, business owner, or consultant, one of the things that you must be doing is making more video content.

Now, I’m not going to give you all the reasons why you should, you can go online, and you can Google that for yourself. Instead, what I want to do is focus on the equipment and the gear and gadgets that you need.

Now, there’s basically in my opinion, four different levels in terms of creating video-based content. So I’m going to quickly share with you those right now, but I’m going to focus on number two, which I’ll get to in just a moment.

So number one, level one is this camera here, this is your smartphone, right? If you have nothing else, sure you can make videos with this.

But if you’re doing these selfie mode ones, the camera on the inside is nowhere near as good as the camera on the back. It’s not super sharp. And oftentimes our sound is going to be a problem as well.

Now you can compensate for that with a little mic here. This is called the ‘RØDE VideoMic Me’ this one is specifically for the iPhone with the lightning jack, you can plug that in and your videos are going to be okay. So that’s one option. And that’s level one.

Now, level four is the other extreme, which is actually where I am right now, which is a studio, which costs more than $100,000 to actually fit out. So just even the lights here at $25,000 worth of light. So that’s another extreme, then you got kind of level three.

And level three would be the cameras that we’re filming from right now. A great kind of Canon here, we got a Sony over here as well. And these are great cameras. The challenge with first of all level four is it’s not portable, you can’t take this everywhere you go. And even these other cameras, while they are awesome, you still require another bag that you have to carry with you.

And you have to learn how to use it. And you normally need a team or a crew to help you make kind of level three and level four video. So that’s why I want to focus on level two, it’s a step up from just the kind of iPhone, but you can actually do it with just your handbag or your backpack or briefcase.

So let me show you the new setup and why I’m so excited about it. So this is the camera setup. Now it’s not actually the entire bag, but all my other stuff in a laptop, some chargers and a whole bunch of other things.

But I’m going to show you the new camera setup, it’s basically three items that you can travel with you everywhere you go, that basically gives you a studio anywhere you are in high-quality videos.

So first of all, we have our tripod, then we also have our microphone. And then we have on this side here, we actually have a camera, and this is a new camera that’s just hit the market. And I’m going to tell you why I’m excited about it in a few moment’s time.

Alright, so this is it, these are the three items that you need. And you can create really good quality videos on your own without a lot of gear or equipment. This is, in fact, everything that you need. And you can shoot the videos yourself. Alright, so let’s get into the items.

First of all, we have a tripod. This here is called the ‘JOBY TelePod’. That’s what this one actually is. And I’ll show you a bit more detail in just a moment, then we have this camera here.

So this camera is brand new, it’s just hit the market. It’s a point-and-shoot camera. So very small. But it is the only one on the market with another one which is a Sony one, which is also just hit that has an external microphone jack, which takes the quality of the sound to a whole new level. So this is called the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III. So this is what this camera is. And I’ll show it to you right now. And we’ll have a closer look at it. And we’ll do a little bit of a demo.

So that’s the camera this can fit into your handbag or briefcase, and you’ve got your tripod here, we’ll show you why that’s important in just a moment, and then you’ve also got your microphone.

Now let’s get into this one here. This is by a company called ‘RØDE’ and that is spelled R O D E. And this is the RØDE Lavalier Go. So I’m now taking it out right now. And here we have our little cable. So I just need to make sure that this here is untangled. There we go.

And we’ve now got our microphone. So I’m literally going to show you the setup of how to make a video, in fact, we’re going to make one right now. So you can see exactly how this all comes together.

So first of all, I’m going to just open up my tripod here. Now this tripod has the stand that you can see. So I can just put it there on the table like so. Or if I’m holding it, I can just collapse the legs and this becomes like a selfie stick.

If you do it with your phone, it’s okay, but you haven’t got much length there, here we can actually get a lot more distance. Especially if you got two people in the shot, it works much better with this little guy here.

So then the next step is what we’re going to do is just screw on the bottom, like so. So I’m scrolling on the bottom. And now we have our camera. Okay, so here it is. This is again the JOBY TelePod. And this here is the Canon G7 X, Mark III.

And then we’re going to plug in the third and final piece of this particular setup. And that is our microphone. So we’re just going to do that right now. And we have our microphone jack just over here on the right-hand side.

So we’ll open that up. And then we’re going to plug in the cable like so. So plugging in the cable into here. And again, this is really one of the only point and shoot style cameras. So super small, super portable, you can fit this camera in your pocket, and it has an external microphone jack. So what we’re going to do is we’re going to plug this in here, like so.

And then basically we’re going to film. So I’m just gonna collapse these legs. If I was wanting to use my arms, what I would be doing is putting this on the table, like so. And I will just be kind of like crouching down or moving it up.

Normally, when you’re sitting on a chair, you’re at the kind of the right height. But in this case, I’m going to do selfie-style. So say I was walking down the street, then we’re good to go. So what I would do is just turn the camera on, and then going to flip up the lid, like so.
And then we’re now going to make a video. So I just now I can see myself in the frame here. And I’m now going to start shooting. And you’ll see exactly what it looks like.

Hey there, it’s Dale here. And in this video, I’m showing you how to use the new Canon G7 X Mark III with the external microphone jack. So this is a test with the external microphone. And now I’m going to actually pull out the microphone and show you what it sounds like.

So this is what it sounds like without having any type of microphone plugged in. Normally, you’ll notice a difference especially when you get outdoors, then the difference is huge. With this microphone plugged in, it normally sounds fuller, more crisp more clear, and eliminates a lot of background noise. Without it, you’re going to hear a bit more ambient noise. You’ll also hear other vehicles and especially if you’re outdoors as well, you’ll hear lots and lots of other sounds.

So that was just a quick test of the setup. And I hope you enjoyed this video.

So that’s it. That’s how you create a video.

And again, if I was wanting to just put this on a table, I could do the same thing with the setup. And once I’ve finished, I basically just close that down, I unscrew it. And this also has the ability for you to transfer wirelessly from this particular camera directly to your phone so you can upload it to Facebook.

This camera also now shoots in 4k if you want to increase the quality and also it can shoot in a one by one or square style ratio as well if you want to make videos and upload them straight to Instagram.

Now once I’m done, all I do is I just unplug the memory card, pop this into my computer. And then if you need any post-production, you can send that to your team for topping and tailing and editing.

Otherwise, you just chop off the beginning, chop off the end and you can upload that straight to your favourite social media platform. So that is it. This is basically the world’s smallest and simplest studio on the go to create really good quality videos without having to lug around another bag with all the other gear and gadgets.

Now one thing is not on here is light. And that’s just another thing to carry, I find that the best kind of light is where you’re actually facing a window. And so if you’re facing a window not with your back to the window, you want to be facing the light. Then if you have the window in front of you facing the light, put the camera on, plug in the microphone, start talking, you’re going to get a really great quality video without having a huge amount of gear and equipment.

So I wanted to share this with you because I’m super excited about this. I waited years for a setup like this. So you’ve got a tripod, and you’ve also got the camera and also the microphone, and you now have no excuse not to make amazing quality videos on the go. I hope you enjoyed this video.
