As a business owner or professional, recording and distributing a podcast is an excellent way to share your message with a vast audience. Participating in podcasts is also a fun and effective strategy for cross-promotion between similar businesses.
Always one to practice what I preach, I recently joined property guru Michael Yardney as a guest on his podcast.
In the episode, Michael and I discuss the ‘7 Essential Characteristics of Highly Successful People’. I have a huge amount to share on this topic, particularly because I have spent my career surrounding myself with ambitious high-achievers in the world of business.
Have a listen, and you’ll discover how the characteristics that lead to success are not necessarily leaving school with honours or coming from a family with money, but developing personality traits like determination, resilience, and a desire to reach the top.
Here’s a quick summary of the 7 traits: do any of them describe you?
Desire
First things first, you have to really want what you set out to achieve, and be willing to do whatever it takes. Your desire should be fuelled by your ‘why’, e.g. achieving financial stability for your family or reaching a bigger goal of raising thousands of dollars for charity.
Determination and Resilience
The road to success isn’t always a smooth one. You’ll never make it if you switch to the exit lane after your first stumbling block.
As the saying goes, “Success isn’t about never being knocked down. It’s about how many times you get back up.”
Taking Action
Sadly, dreaming it and wishing for it won’t make it happen. Sure, you should spend some time visualising what you want, but unless you pick up the phone, send that email, post your first flyer or do something tangible, your dreams will never be a reality.
Self-Education
The most successful people I know may not have graduated as the Dux of their school, but they never stop learning. This includes reading books, listening to podcasts and streaming educational content. Successful people attend seminars and workshops, sometimes travelling the world to hear from the best of the best.
Likeability
Yes, nice guys do finish first. However, because nobody can achieve amazing things without a fantastic team behind them. And your team won’t push your business in the right direction unless they think you are a decent, deserving person. Treat people well and earn their trust.
Systemisation
Use your hours in the most efficient way by setting up systems and delegating to your team. It may take a while to train people up and having them doing a good job, but once they get the hang of things, you can move on to more productive tasks.
Focus
You only get paid for the projects you complete. Develop the focus you need to see things through to the end. With that said, don’t forget to make time for your friends and family, or you will burn out and have nobody to celebrate with when you hit those milestones.
Michael’s podcast goes out to an audience of thousands. I’m humbled to have been invited to participate and was excited to hear what he had to say on the subject as well.
