Hi. I’m Dale Beaumont, founder and CEO of Business Blueprint with another FAQ video. In this video, I’m going to talk about one of those terms we hear about a lot. Many people still don’t know what it actually is. What we’re going to be talking about today is landing pages. The question is what is a landing page and why do I need one?Let me give you the definition first of all then I’ll show you a few examples. Then I’ll be talking to you about why they actually work and very quickly about how to get one. Let’s get going.
It’s a Single Page Website Designed to Focus a Person’s Attention
A landing page is a single page website designed to focus a person’s attention on one core offer and nothing else. That’s what a landing page actually is. Now even though we say it’s a single page website, it really normally has at least a two or sometimes even three pages as well because once they actually put in their name and email address and effectively what’s called opt-in then they’ll go to what’s called a thank you page. Then from there the gift or the lead magnet as it’s often times called, introducing some more terminology is then sent to them via email. After that they may never go to that website again. It’s a single page website designed to focus a person’s attention on one core thing and get rid of any other distractions.
Give Away Lead Magnets to Focus on One Core Message
Let me give you a couple of examples of landing pages. Here we have a landing page. This here is one of mine and this here is for giving away two book summaries. These are books by marketing expert Seth Godin and you can see the books there. One’s called Purple Cow and the other one’s called Survival Is Not Enough.
If you go to this particular page and you put in your name and email address, then you get sent these books absolutely free. There is nothing else on this website. I didn’t talk about the company mission. I didn’t talk about our values. I didn’t talk about our team. There’s not even contact information on this particular website. That might be down at the bottom but the whole focus of this is one thing and one thing only and that’s to give away these two books in exchange for someone’s name and email address. There’s no navigation at the top and there is just one core message. Now in a future video, I can actually go through and explain to you the anatomy of a landing page and what you should have where, talk about the headlines, talk about how to put a video together for a landing page, bullet points, everything. That’s a topic for another conversation. In fact, they go through this in a lot more detail when you attend our event that I run called New Rules of Business.
Use Lead Magnets to Generate Leads
That aside, let me go through a couple of other examples. This one here’s from a marketing guy called Ryan Deiss and you can see this is where he does a 10 minute social media audit and there’s a headline, a bit of a description and a picture of the actual item, The Lead Magnet, the thing that he’s giving away for free and then also a name and an email address right there.
This is another one that I saw last night in fact. This is a person that’s put together an e-book or report. It’s called How I Got 2.3 Million Downloads Of My App. I thought that was quite interesting, would like to read it but in order to read it, I just had to pop in my email address right there. I did that and then subscribed to that person’s database.
This is one more right here. This one is from Sprout Social. This one is about How To Build A Social Media Content Calendar and this is an actual webinar. This is also another landing page. You will notice a number of different consistencies here. Generally speaking, there’s no navigation. It’s just one core offer and nothing else. Now later on, again, we’ll talk about what offers you can have for your business. It doesn’t matter what you’re selling, there’s always something that you can use as a gift on a landing page. Landing Pages Convert at a 100-300% Better Than a Normal Company Website
Why should you have a landing page is the next question. The reason being is because they convert at a 100-300% better than a normal company website. They convert so much better. As a couple of examples, one of my websites that I have, more company style website converts at somewhere between 5-7%. That landing page that I showed you just before converts at somewhere between 25-30%. That is a lot more, very conservatively. It’s a 100% increase in regards to your conversion rate. Sometimes even up to 300%, so if you’re doing marketing and you want to generate more leads, it’s basically taking your funnel and making your funnel a whole lot wider. If everything else stays the same in your business and you’ve doubled the number of leads that you’re taking in, then you’ve effectively doubled the size of your business just by having a really good what we call “Front end offer” and that front end offer is presented on our landing page, okay. They convert so much better.
Why do they actually work? Now to tell you why they work, I’m just going to talk about a little bit of an analogy that I heard. I don’t know if it’s true or not. Maybe you can tell me if you happen to be in this particular profession but it certainly made a lot of sense to me at the time. This does explain why a landing page actually converts so much better.
To explain this to you, I’ve got to use a rather unusual example and that is how a lion tamer would tame a lion at this circus. If you ever see a lion tamer, one of the things they always have in their hand is they have a chair, okay. They use this special type of chair, normally it’s a stool, and that has four particular points. You will see if they’re trying to hold back a lion, one of the things that they do is they hold this chair like so and they make sure that those points are always moving. This kind of confuses the lion. They’re not too sure what to do. They can’t see a static object. They don’t know which one to jump at so basically that stalls them from making a decision and that’s what holds them back. However, if the lion tamer made a big mistake and put a stick like this in front of them, then that lion would just reach out and try to grab that stick as quickly as possible because there’s only one thing for it to actually focus on.
Confusion Leads to No Sales
There’s a saying in marketing, I learned this from a mentor of mine, a guy called Hans Jacobi. He said, “Confusion leads to no sales. If you give people too many choices, they end up doing nothing.” By limiting the choices that you give people, your conversion rate will be a whole lot higher.
