Need some advice on starting a business of your own? Treading through loads of information and not sure what to do with it, or better yet, even where to begin? You have come to the right place! In this snippet of an interview between Dale Beaumont and Shelley Barrett you will find incredible advice to help you on your journey as a successful business owner.
At just 21 years of age, Shelley started her own boutique modelling agency. Over the next 10 years it grew into Shelley’s Management Group, comprising Face Models, Lollipop Childrens Model Management and Commercial Face Actors. Looking for a new challenge, she then created ModelCo, a company which produces quick-fix and multipurpose beauty products and exports them right across the globe.
What advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur who wants to get started in a business of their own?
Make sure you have a real passion for the industry you wish to break into; ensure that you have a good business plan; surround yourself with a great team of people who share your vision; and most importantly, set goals!
A goal is not just something that you aim for, it is a powerful contributor to successful business growth in several ways. To begin with, the process of setting goals forces you to think through what you want from your business and how growth may or may not provide that. This helps to suggest directions for pursuing that growth, which can greatly improve your chances of achieving your goals in the first place. Goals also give you a framework within which to work, which focuses your efforts and helps you to rule out actions that won’t contribute to their achievement.
A very important part of that framework is a timetable. A good timetable will influence your actions profoundly. For example, if your goal is to retire by age 40, you’ll know that any growth plan with a payoff that won’t occur until your 51st birthday is not one that you’ll consider, no matter how attractive it might seem. Write your goals down and put them somewhere you’ll see them every day, such as on your bulletin board, by your desk, on your bathroom mirror, even on your refrigerator. You may think you’ll remember your goals five months or five years down the road, but a visual reminder will do wonders to help you stay focused on the goals you’ve set and on the tasks you need to complete on a daily basis to achieve them.
Create targets worth reaching but be realistic and set goals that can be achieved. If you set a goal to earn $100,000 per month when you’ve never even earned that much in a year, that goal is unrealistic. Begin with small steps, such as increasing your monthly income by 25 per cent, and when you achieve that goal, you can reach for larger ones.
