The attainment of a small business plan is foundational to the success of any business. We’ve all heard it: If you fail to plan, You plan to fail. Yet a clear plan can seem hazy even to the biggest of dreamers. Seeing the big picture is vital and knowing how to plan is not always naturally occurring in every entrepreneur.
In this portion of an interview given by Dale Beaumont, Peter Davis gives incredible insights on success, including three types of business plans that will help you stay focused and be more effective. Peter Davis is a self confessed “Serial Entrepreneur”, owner of The Eagle Group Of Companies and expert on the Enneagram. His business activities have allowed him to travel all over the world to learn from some of the greatest business minds.
What is the most important thing you have learnt about succeeding in business?
Enjoy the journey! This is perhaps one of the greatest lessons I’ve learnt about succeeding in business. Don’t choose a destination unless you can enjoy the road that takes you there. Business should not be a life sacrifice, but rather an opportunity to embrace life with passion, fun and desire. Yes, by all means work hard to fulfill your goals, be prepared to take risks, transcend your fears and strengthen your self-belief, but don’t forget to focus on the other major areas of your life – self-development, family, community and spirit. It’s very easy to become overwhelmed with your own success. However, you can ride the crest of a wave one minute and then come crashing down the next, so research your product, market well and plan your strategy. I usually make three plans:
- Optimistic Plan (shoot for the stars)
- Pessimistic Plan (worst-case scenario)
- Realistic Plan (attainable reality plan)
Planning in this manner allows me to focus on a winning strategy that is neither under nor over-ambitious, yet still takes into account the unimaginable!
