What are your top tips for creating an effective induction process?
The overall key to being effective in the induction process is to make like a Boy Scout and be prepared. The second key is to think through the steps that you believe will help the person to hit the ground running.
- Create a checklist for the essential things required for their first day. For example, business cards, desk and chair, phone, passwords, keys, computer, stationery, organisational chart, staff phone lists and so on. Then make sure you have them ready.
- List activities and meetings for the new employee over the first couple of weeks, so that they get to meet all the people they will need to know to succeed.
- Assign a buddy for lunch on day one, so they don’t have to dine alone.
- Allow sufficient time on day one for you to get them started, including clearly articulating your expectations for them over the first three months.
- On day one, introduce everyone directly related to the new person’s job.
- Arrange a follow-up schedule for meetings with the new person.
These six pieces will get you started on solving the puzzle of getting the most from your investment in the new member of your team.
